PASTORAL CARE OF PUPILS
Our school is dedicated to providing bespoke pastoral support to ensure the well-being and development of every child. The key aspects of our pastoral support are:
Caring Environment: We cultivate a caring and inclusive environment where children feel safe, supported, and valued. This is fundamental to their overall well-being.
Dedicated Pastoral Team: We have a dedicated team, including teachers and support staff, responsible for pastoral care. They work collaboratively to address the social, emotional, and personal needs of children.
Open Communication Channels: We maintain open and effective communication channels between children, parents, and school staff. This ensures that concerns are addressed promptly, and achievements are celebrated.
Personalised Support Plans: Where necessary, we develop personalised support plans which are tailored to individual needs and may involve academic, social, emotional, or mental health support.
Bullying Prevention and Intervention: Our school has a comprehensive approach to bullying prevention. We promote a culture of respect and kindness, and intervention strategies are in place to address any instances of bullying.
Emotional Well-being Programmes: We integrate programmes that focus on emotional well-being into our curriculum. These aim to equip children with the tools to navigate emotions, build resilience, and develop positive relationships. This might be an intervention for individuals or small groups, or a whole-school approach such as My Happy Mind.
Peer Support Initiatives: We encourage positive peer relationships through various initiatives, fostering a sense of community and support among children.
Our commitment to pastoral support reflects our belief that a nurturing and supportive environment is essential for children to thrive academically, socially and emotionally throughout their primary school years. We are committed to a therapeutic approach at Burley, and invest heavily in services such as family support, counselling, play therapy and more to support our children and families.
LEARNING MENTOR
Mrs Jackson is our Learning Mentor and Family Support Officer. Her role is to promote a positive relationship between home and school, removing barriers to learning.
She provides family support, nurture group work and adult education classes for parents. She also provides opportunities for parents to support their child and works with community networks to support school.
For more information, please contact Mrs Jackson via the school office.
INTENT
National benchmarks show that, on entry to Burley, attainment is significantly below age-related expectations. Children are likely to live in an area of high deprivation, communication skills may be below those expected for their age and the majority attract pupil premium funding. It is likely a range of support will be needed in order to remove barriers to learning.
Our school ethos is clear: everyone is special. Our vision is for children from all walks of life to have made progress from their starting points and leave Burley with the skills, knowledge and strength of character to be successful, unlock their future and believe in themselves.
There is a clear gap between where our children are and where we want them to be. It is our intent for our pastoral curriculum as well as our academic curriculum to become the vehicle to close it. By developing each child as a whole, we provide the skills, knowledge and self-belief that are espoused in our ethos and vision.
ATTENDANCE
Miss Marwick is our Attendance Officer. Her role is to promote good attendance by working with families to overcome barriers.
She is also supported by attendance officers from BCL Attendance support, who also complete home visits, meet with families and provide attendance analysis. If you are struggling with attendance or worried about your child's attendance or punctuality, reach out to one of our pastoral team for a non-judgemental listening ear, and support in any way we can.
