Equalities

Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging at Burley St Matthias C of E Primary School

At Burley St Matthias C of E Primary School, we believe that all children should receive equal access to the full school curriculum and wider school experience regardless of first language, disability, race, gender, cultural or socio-economic background. We believe that every child has the right to equality of outcome and to achieve their full potential. In order to achieve equity, we use positive action and reasonable adjustments to ensure all stakeholders have an equal chance to achieve, participate and fulfil their roles in school and the wider community. We welcome our responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010. Our Equality Policy follows local authority recommendations.

At Burley St Matthias C of E Primary, we aim to create a diverse curriculum which reflects the diversity of our pupils, our local and wider community. We celebrate diversity by learning about a broad range of historical and current figures in all walks of life. This provides the opportunity to see a wide range of humanity, see people to which they can aspire that are similar to themselves and develop tolerance and understanding of people with different beliefs, religions, genders, abilities and sexual orientations.

The school is committed to proving equality of opportunity for all, irrespective of:

·Age

·Gender (Sex)

·Gender reassignment

·Pregnancy and maternity

·Race or racial group (including colour, nationality and ethnic origin or national origins)

·Religion or belief

·Sexual orientation

At Burley St Matthias C of E Primary School we aim to promote equality and develop positive relationships, by tackling any form of discrimination. As part of our duty under the Equality Act 2010 and the Public Sector Equality Duty we aim to eliminate discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations in relation to the protected characteristics.

At Burley St Matthias C of E Primary School, we strive to nurture children’s spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development. We place a strong focus on promoting equality, embracing diversity, and addressing any incidents of prejudice involving children or staff. Our aim is not only to eliminate discrimination but also to foster understanding and appreciation of individual differences. We firmly believe that recognising the uniqueness of every individual contributes to the success and well-being of both children and staff.

The children learn about protected characteristics through our PSHE curriculum and also through weekly Collective Worship. We are determined to provide a curriculum that is balanced and inclusive. We want our children to explore ideas and perspectives that may challenge their understanding, helping them develop into accepting and inclusive individuals. Sensitive and potentially controversial topics will always be addressed in ways that avoid discrimination and instead encourage inclusive attitudes.

At Burley St Matthias C of E Primary School, prejudice of any kind is not tolerated. Whether direct or indirect, all incidents of discrimination are treated with the highest level of seriousness. Our robust reporting procedures ensure that all incidents are addressed promptly and that resolutions are both fair and firm, supporting the values we uphold as a school.

Equality Objectives

The Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED) requires all schools to publish specific and measurable equality objectives. Our equality objectives are based on our analysis of data and other information. Our equality objectives focus on those areas where we have agreed to take action to improve equality and tackle disadvantages.

We will regularly review the progress we are making to meet our equality objectives.
